Kyinsim Drum - 'Symbolic Leaf'

Description: Fossilized prints of giant leaves lend a distinctive appearance to this kyinsim drum. From Benin, this drum is fashioned after those used by the Akwapim people to herald the king's arrival, or to welcome guests at the royal palace. Hand-carved from sese wood, the piece features a goatskin drumhead held taut with iron rings, and batik cloth to prevent rusting. Presented by Louis K. Botchway and Bomukasa, this drum makes an entertaining gift for the admirer of African music.
