Description: Colorful pompoms add bright appeal to a hand-crafted tinya by Juan León Ponce. A type of bombo (drum), it boasts Andean motifs on the mate gourd body. Ponce creates an instrument steeped in tradition, as it once marked the beat of battle for Chankas and Pokras warriors. Resonant cowhide forms the drumhead, and the drumstick is fashioned of cumala wood.

Born in Junin on June 24, 1960, Juan León Ponce crafts musical instruments. His art is a family tradition. Ponce remembers helping his father create tinyas – drums – while still a child. Their instruments were played by a number of musical groups in traditional fiestas and celebrations.
