Sculpted by hand, it adorns this remarkable djembe. The djembe drum originated in Benin, where it is used during voodoo rites, and has been introduced into neighboring countries; it has become indispensable in reggae. Coleman names this drum Mpitim, which means "Musical Organ" in the Akan language. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé cord can be slung over the shoulder.
