Gourd Drum - 'Huancayo' Hand Drum

Description: Andean dancers appear on the warm surface of a mate gourd. Transformed into a traditional tamborina, or hand-held drum, it is superbly hand-crafted by Juan León Ponce. Its cowhide drumheads emit a soft beat when twisted backward and forward.

Born in Junin on June 24, 1960, Juan León Ponce crafts musical instruments. His art is a family tradition. Ponce remembers helping his father create tinyas – drums – while still a child. Their instruments were played by a number of musical groups in traditional fiestas and celebrations.
