Scallops unfold
on the slender base of this djembe drum by Nana Adu Amankwapam
I. Hewn from a block of tweneboah wood, the traditional percussion
instrument is finished wth mansion polish. The goatskin head
is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé
cord can be slung over the shoulder. The djembe originated
in Benin, where it is traditionally used during voodoo rites,
and has been introduced into neighboring countries such as
Ghana. Amankwapam names this original piece Asempa, which
means "Good News" in the Akan language. This sort of drum
is played to proclaim good tidings.
