Description: Colorful motifs in bold hues bring a festive air to a pair of traditional tamasas, or "stick drums." The first is hand-crafted from a mate gourd engraved with abstract motifs. The other is fashioned of wood and adorned with pompoms. Resonant cowhide drumheads emit a lively beat when the cumala wood handles are twisted back and forth.

Born in Junin on June 24, 1960, Juan León Ponce crafts musical instruments. His art is a family tradition. Ponce remembers helping his father create tinyas – drums – while still a child. Their instruments were played by a number of musical groups in traditional fiestas and celebrations.
